My attorney says a disclaimer at the bottom of every email is “just good business.” I suppose that’s true, but I hate disclaimers.
I hate the warnings on product labels for the same reason. The label on an iron says, “do not iron clothes while wearing them” because somebody burned himself while trying it and sued the iron manufacturer. Now, every iron has this warning on a label even though 99.9% people have the common sense not to iron clothes while wearing them. Nobody reads the warnings, but the manufacturer includes them because it’s “just good business.”
Here’s my compromise. Instead of lengthening every email with disclaimers few will read, I’m including a link to this page of disclaimers. My attorney is happy because I’m protecting the business. I’m happy because a link only takes one line of my email signature.
