MW Review: 3x3Custom – Tamar

3x3Custom might be the most aspirational channel for me. Moto Woodworks is still a side hustle, but when I retire and move into woodworking full time, a lot of what Tamar Hannah does is what I would like to do.

Published September 1, 2017. I wish all woodworkers would do an intro video like this, and I hope Tamar takes the time to watch this and appreciate how far she has come in eight years. She’s a mother of three, learning as she goes, sharing her journey, and it’s an amazing journey. Note the beginner tools on the wall behind her – I too started with Ryobi cordless tools because they were inexpensive and got the job done.

Published December 15, 2023. This is a compilation video of her workbench build. The full build is documented in a three-part series that includes a lot more detail, but it’s clear her woodworking skill has grown exponentially. The quality of the tools in her workshop has also improved dramatically.

Published September 19, 2025. Don’t be fooled by the thumbnail – the wall cabinets are actually a small part of the video. She talks a lot about the layout of her workshop and the wall cabinets just happen to be a byproduct of moving things around. Like a lot of woodworkers these days (not me yet), Tamar invested in a 3D printer. But she is making the best use of a 3D printer that I’ve seen. It perfectly complements her builds – I’m so jealous!

Video Production

3x3Custom has excellent video production. Tamar uses a lot of camera angles, which is very helpful for viewers trying to pick up on her skills. I think there are a couple of cameras that are permanently mounted because I recognize the view from video to video (the overhead views). But she also gets tight shots inside of cabinets and underneath benches. That’s in addition to the views from the ends of boards she is planing at her workbench, the outfeeds of her table saw and band saw, side views of the jointer and drum sander, etc.

The audio tracks are very thoughtful mixes of live recordings and post-recording voiceovers. Between that and some well-placed speed-ups, viewers cannot help but feel educated in a very efficient manner.

Content

3x3Custom videos cover three general categories.

• Furniture. Tamar’s builds span a wide range from chairs and benches to guitars and keyboard stands. I like that she finds time to do a lot around her home and for her kids.
• Workshop. In addition to the dream workbench mentioned above, I really enjoyed her cabinet builds (see router table and shop cabinet videos). And it’s been great to see the evolution of her workshop.
• Techniques. Tamar does a lot with jigs. My current cross-cut sled is a knock off of her clever design. But there is a ton of content for every level of DIYer. Her videos on curved drawers and bleached wood are super interesting!

Conclusion

At the time of this post, 3x3Custom was not in the top 10 of any the metrics I track, but comes closest in views per video at 14th. It won’t surprise me if the channel climbs into the top 10 within the next year or two.

Great video production, great content. Tamar’s story is truly inspiring and in my opinion she is the standard for female woodworkers on YouTube.
