MW Review: Duratech 5-Piece Plier Set

Technically, I’ve had a plier set for a long time! It was an old, mismatched set of pliers that had made their way into my toolbox over the past 20 years.

Why I bought a plier set

Most of my tools were bought for a specific project. I bought an oscillating multi-tool because I knew I would need to flush-cut some cabinet trim, for example. But I never really go into a project thinking I need pliers. It’s usually for a task that is a step or two removed from the project. Removing staples from of the ends of the 2v4s I just purchased. Removing a screw I broke the head off of. Holding a nut in place while I torque the bolt with a socket driver.

DuraTech 5-Piece Plier Set
From left to right: 6″ long nose pliers, 6″ diagonal cutting pliers, 6″ slip-joint pliers, 8″ linesman pliers, and 8″ groove-joint pliers. The set came with a nice rolling pouch, but these are mounted in my workshop for easy access.

It’s the consequence of not having the correct pliers when I needed them that drove me to finally buy a plier set. That, and I really wanted pliers that I kept in my workshop (as opposed to in the bag that went with me to the job site). I chose a DuraTech plier set because I liked the DuraTech ratcheting screwdriver I had purchased earlier.

The Good Stuff

  • Quality. The pliers feel well made with strong joints that don’t have any wiggle in them. I’m a fan of the ergonomic, non-slip grips. I think the quality is particularly high given the reasonable price point.
  • Durability. It’s hard to say in the few months I’ve had these pliers, but they are made from Cr-Ni steel and carbon steel, resist corrosion and rust, and are easy to clean. Especially since 99% of their use will be in my workshop, I expect a 20-year service life.
  • The convenience of buying a set. As I mentioned earlier, it’s not like I knew exactly which pliers I needed – I just knew I wanted to have a reasonable chance of having the correct pliers on hand. A set of three seemed too small and a set of seven seemed too big. And so far anyway, that bit of guess-timating has served me well.

The Bad Stuff

  • None (yet). Time will tell if these pliers begin to falter with use. For now, they’ve met or exceeded my expectations.

Conclusion

The DuraTech 5-Piece Plier Set has performed well in the two months I’ve had it. I’ve had a chance to use each of them for different applications and have not been disappointed. I made a pliers holder and keep the set in my workshop, so I don’t use the oxford rolling pouch. However, the pouch is well made and a nice touch for those who want the portability.
